The years between 1866 and 1930 were a time of extraordinary growth and transformation in the United States. As the nation emerged from the Civil War, Americans worked to reunite the country and define what it meant to be citizens of one nation. During these decades, patriotism became a powerful expression of national identity. American flags, patriotic banners, commemorative souvenirs, and images of national heroes found their way into homes, schools, businesses, and public celebrations across the country.
In honor of America’s upcoming 250th Anniversary, the Harris-Kearney House is proud to present our newest exhibit – PATRIOTISM IN AMERICA – on display in the museum dining room now through September 1.
We are honored to showcase selections from the magnificent Victorian-era patriotic collection of Randy Doler, featuring decorative artifacts dating from 1866 to 1930. By the early twentieth century, patriotic objects had become a familiar part of everyday life, symbolizing unity, progress, civic responsibility, and faith in the nation’s future. These colorful and inspiring pieces reflect pride in America’s achievements and illustrate how public displays of patriotism became woven into the fabric of daily life.
As we commemorate 250 years of our nation’s history, these artifacts offer a fascinating glimpse into how earlier generations expressed their love of country and celebrated the enduring American story.
Randy Doler, of Indiana, is an avid collector of Victorian-era antiques and artifacts. Many visitors may remember the Harris-Kearney House holiday exhibit featuring beautiful Christmas-patterned china from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, drawn from the collections of Randy and his sister, Juliet Rujevcan, one of the newest members of the Westport Historical Society Board of Directors.
We encourage you to visit and experience this remarkable collection of American history and patriotism.
