Tucked into the rolling hills of Swope Park, Starlight Theatre has been one of Kansas City’s most distinctive live performance venues since opening in 1950, blending the energy of entertainment with the natural beauty of one of the nation’s largest urban parks.

Lindsey Rood-Clifford, Starlight’s president and CEO, reflects on the theater’s 75-year history: from its transformation as a municipally driven summer stage into a nationally recognized performing arts institution — while balancing tradition and innovation — and shares stories of memorable productions, beloved performers, and the behind-the-scenes efforts that keep the curtain rising season after season.

She also discusses Starlight’s growing impact beyond the stage, including its extensive educational programs, partnerships throughout Kansas City, and its commitment to connecting with the community through live arts experiences that entertain, inspire, and engage.

Rood-Clifford started her career as a paid summer intern at Starlight, then served as a consultant for nonprofit and corporate clients. She held roles as chief operating officer and vice president of philanthropy before being appointed president and CEO in 2023.

To celebrate Starlight’s rich history, archival materials donated to the Library’s Missouri Valley Special Collections in 2023 will be on display during the program.
