Part of our “Expansion of Professional Development for Poets” series and a featured event of the Queer Narratives Festival, this unique session is designed for writers and creatives looking to bring text and visual art closer together.
In this hands-on, three-hour workshop, Kai will share their unique perspective on visual storytelling, compiling moments, and translating the deep emotion of the written word into striking illustration.

About the Instructor:
Kai Johnson (they/them) is an illustrator and designer based in Kansas City, MO, with a deep passion for mental health advocacy and creative self-expression. A former official artist for the Queer Narratives Festival, Kai has brought numerous high-profile projects to life, including merchandise for the KC Current Pride Collection, a hand-painted banner for the Google Pixel X NWSL Championship, a children’s mental health journal, and custom wrestling uniforms. When not creating, Kai loves ducks, early 2000s cartoons, and roller skating.
