Kansas City is shaped by communities and traditions from all around the world. From immigrants who arrived in KC generations ago to modern tastemakers who have established a leading presence for themselves, global ties can be found throughout the across the region.

Check out nearly a dozen neighborhoods and KC-area destinations where rich international influences are on full display.

River Market

The River Market is often recognized for its expansive farmers market that returns to the heart of the neighborhood each weekend, but the City Market is also home to shops and restaurants that serve up international flavors all throughout the week. Start exploring at the Paella Mix, Taste of Brazil or Ting’s Filipino Bistro.

Some of the City Market’s favorite restaurants are also storefronts for spices, fresh breads and other food supplies. Tikka House is an ideal pick for Indian spices and dishes. A few doors down, Habashi House and Al Habashi Mart have an extensive selection of Middle Eastern flavors. Carollo’s Grocery & Deli is an unmatched destination for Italian goods.

Outside the City Market’s lineup of eclectic shops, plenty of full-service choices are available throughout the River Market. Blue Nile Cafe is a popular Ethiopian restaurant in the heart of the neighborhood. Next door, ENZO Bistro & Wine Bar has menus with Italian and Greek influences for brunch, lunch and dinner. Both restaurants offer patio seating for anyone hoping to experience the River Market’s daily energy.

Le Fou Frog prepares upscale French plates, Phikul Thai Bistro has an extensive menu of noodle dishes and curries, and the Italian Sausage Co. serves deli-style sandwiches.

Columbus Park

Nestled at the edge of downtown Kansas City and originally known as the North End, the area was home to immigrants from around the world in its early years. These arrivals included Italian (and particularly Sicilian) residents.

The modern-day Columbus Park maintains a significant Italian community. Garrozzo’s, one of the city’s most well-recognized Italian restaurants, opened in the neighborhood in 1989. It’s joined by Vocci, a top supplier of Italian food supplies.

The neighborhood is also home to one of the area’s largest Vietnamese populations. It’s evident in the culinary offerings at Vietnam Café and Pho Lan KC, along with Cafe Cà Phê—Kansas City’s first Vietnamese coffee shop.

Columbus Park’s Asian influences continue to expand with the debut of a storefront for Hella Good Deeds, an incubator for Asian-owned businesses supported by the City of Kansas City’s Open Doors program.

Northeast Kansas City

Few KC communities rival the culinary diversity of Northeast Kansas City. Home to many Hispanic residents and a welcoming community for refugees who are new to the region, rich global influences are evident in the area’s dining choices.

Yasmeen Cafe’s halal dishes reflect a variety of African and Mediterranean influences. Continue down Independence Avenue for paletas at Frutopia, casava and fried plantains at La Cubana, and pan dulce at Elvira’s Cakes. Explore through the Northeast KC International Marketplace.

Northeast KC is also home to the Museum of Kansas City, an institution dedicated to preserving the stories of the city across generations. The space features in-depth exhibitions on the Native communities that historically inhabited spaces across the Kansas City area, as well as resources detailing the immigration patterns that shaped the region across the 19th and 20th centuries.

Crossroads Arts District

The Crossroads is regularly recognized as one of the city’s leading culinary destinations. While the downtown neighborhood draws inspiration from all around the world, a few staples mirror the rich tastes of Europe and Latin America.

Grünauer relies on Viennese technique for its schnitzel and many more Austrian dishes, all served in a warm, wooden dining room. Affäre is known for its always-rotating menu of modern German plates, along with a wine program that has been recognized by the James Beard Foundation. Lidia’s, a longstanding Italian establishment by famed chef Lidia Bastianich, is beloved for its pasta tasting trio.

Café Corazón is a treasured coffee shop and a vibrant community gathering space. The founders’ Argentine, Mexican and Mescalero Apache roots are infused in the cafe’s menu items, along with the art displayed on the shop’s walls and its regular lineup of live entertainment. Down the street, Café Ollama is popular for its café de olla.

Midtown/Westport

The area defined as Kansas City’s Midtown is sprawling—and the cultures that have shaped its culinary identity are equally vast.

Westport houses plenty of gems for its food-focused visitors. Westport Cafe beckons guests with velvet curtains and dramatic lighting, but once you’ve stepped inside, its fine French dishes and brilliant cocktails are equally enticing. The tasting tour through Westport continues with Chewology for Taiwanese creations, Taco Naco for Mexican street food and Jerusalem Cafe for Mediterranean fare.

There’s also the chance to raise a glass at Kelly’s Westport Inn, a humble—but often raucous—Irish pub housed in the city’s oldest building. (Looking for more encounters with the Emerald Isle? Just a few blocks north, Browne’s Irish Market has been retailing the imports of Ireland to KC since 1887.)

Beyond Westport, the broader Midtown area is equally flavorful. Black Garlic draws on an infusion of Ethiopian and Caribbean cooking. To the east, Fannie’s West African Cuisine is a neighborhood staple with an extensive menu. From jollof rice and egusi soup to freshly prepared samosas, there’s plenty to savor.

In the other direction, 39th Street West shines through its colorful and creative restaurants. Beirut Taco brings Lebanese flair to Mexican street food with chicken shawarma tacos, labneh salsa macha and so much more. Across the street, Taj Palace is known for its comforting Indian dishes.

Country Club Plaza

Kansas City has been an official sister city of Seville, Spain, since 1967—but the country’s influences on the Heart of America reach back more than a century.

The Country Club Plaza opened in 1923 as the country’s first outdoor shopping district designed to accommodate automobile traffic. It also drew inspiration directly from the streets of Seville, and that Spanish artistry remains on full display now.

The most striking artifact is the ornate Giralda Tower, a half-scale replica of the original structure in Spain. The tower’s carillon bells chime regularly throughout the district. Terracotta details, colorful tile displays and more Spanish-inspired architecture can be found throughout the streets of the Plaza, creating a unique and alluring shopping environment.

Westside

For generations, the Westside has been a central location for Mexican and Hispanic life in Kansas City.

The area is home to a pair of impactful community organizations. The Guadalupe Centers has been serving Kansas City’s Latino populations since 1919. The Mattie Rhodes Cultural Center welcomes rotating exhibits that explore Latino culture.

Los Alamos Cocina has been perched at the heart of the district for two decades, while Yoli Tortilleria made a recent splash with its Sonoran-style flour tortillas, garnering a James Beard Award for Outstanding Bakery in 2023.

The Westside is also home to Clay & Fire, a cozy spot inspired by the flavors of the Near East and tucked inside a former two-story home. Its menu features dahl, kebab, Turkish pizza and Palestinian za’atar wings, among many other picks.

Southwest Boulevard

Cutting through the heart of the Westside, the street boasts so many hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants, it’s known (and beloved) as a dining destination all on its own.

In just a few blocks, Southwest Boulevard contains nearly a dozen picks for baked goods, lunches, dinners and desserts. From full plates at Tacos El Gallo and Ricos Tacos Lupe to conchas at Panaderia de Las Americas and paletas at Palacana, nearly every storefront offers something to savor.

For sit-down fare with European inspiration, head right across the street to La Bodega for Spanish tapas and sangria. Eye-catching tilework and plenty of space create a particularly inviting ambiance.

Gladstone

An unassuming area in the Northland known as Little Saigon Plaza houses a handful of restaurants, each with its own specialties.

Check out Lotus Hot Pot & Grill for Korean barbecue and hot pot. San’s Sandwiches prepares a selection of bahn mi, along with other dishes and Vietnamese iced coffee. Pho Tuoi is a destination for a satisfying assortment of pho, noodles and rice.

Another pick in Little Saigon Plaza is Broken Rice & Pho Restaurant Com Tam Viet. True to its name, the restaurant prepares a collection of dishes that include broken rice—while these fragmented grains were historically seen as defective, they’ve become a staple in Vietnamese dining.

Strawberry Hill & Downtown KCK

The downtown Kansas City, Kansas, area is home to a substantial lineup of Mexican restaurants, along with annual cultural events and community organizations.

There are dozens of taquerias in the area. Each provides a unique experience, from quesabirria at GG’s Barbacoa Café to an extensive array of picks inside the bakery, grocery and taco shop at Bonito Michoacán. Those who prefer a dining experience inspired by the oceans can enjoy fine Mexican seafood, including a menu of ceviche choices, at Jarocho.

The Hispanic roots of KCK reach beyond its restaurants.

Each year, the Central Avenue Betterment Association hosts a series of events celebrating the cultures present in the area, including the Flavors of Central Tour, Día de Muertos, the Dotteversity Parade and more.

Strawberry Hill is also home to St. John’s Catholic Club, a Croatian parish that hosts regular celebrations and watch parties for the Adriatic nation.

Lenexa

Near the northeast corner of this Kansas destination, diners will find a handful of restaurants serving the cuisines of the Middle East and North Africa.

Visitors to Algerian Delights are greeted with a colorful case full of pastries and cakes, along with savory items like mhajeb and pizza. Around the corner, KC Grill ‘N Kabob prepares a menu of Persian dishes.

The menu at Holy Land Cafe has a vast selection of Middle Eastern plates, and the adjacent Pak Halal International Foods is a grocery store specializing in Middle Eastern and African items.
