This year marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. At first, its message only included white male landowners. Over time, this document inspired the abolitionist and women’s suffrage movements. Today, it still represents American ideals like equality, liberty, and self-governance. 

The exhibition, We Hold These Truths, displays 10 new blackout poems by writer and artist José Faus, using the Declaration of Independence as the starting point.   

Faus leads a blackout poetry workshop in conjunction with his solo exhibition, discussing the concepts behind his artwork, his creative process, and strategies for creating blackout poetry. He also guides attendees in crafting their own blackout poems, providing a variety of seminal texts as the starting points.
