Featured Artist: Jean McGuire

Jean McGuire returned to painting after a nearly 40-year hiatus. She has had work in group shows both locally in Kansas City, and nationally.

Locally, she has had pieces in the Overland Park Art at The Center, in Plug Gallery, in the Hilliard Gallery, in the “Faces of Kansas City” show at the Epsten Gallery, a three person show at RG Endres Gallery, a three woman show at 80 Santa Fe Gallery, and in the 20th Annual Juried Show at Images Art Gallery.

Nationally, she has had pieces in the “Voices of the Midwest” exhibit at Fine Line Creative Art, St. Charles, IL, the “Finding Our Voices” show at Kelwood Gallery in Baton Rouge, the “Everything Blue” show at MVA Gallery in Bethlehem, PA, at the CAL International 2023 show at the Conroe Art League in Conroe, TX, and at the Fayetteville State Her Story exhibition.

Jean has also had solo shows in the Kansas City area, including “Telling Their Stories” at HJ’s Gallery, and “Looking Back” at All Soul’s Gallery. She has twice been featured in different Johnson County libraries. She has also had her work shown at the Olathe YMCA, Henderson Business Solutions, KPMG Solutions, Burns McDonnell, and Spencer Fane .

Her current body of work focuses on figurative pieces based on antique photos that she finds intriguing. She feels like her mission is to try and tell the stories that history never taught us. Using a very limited palette her work tries to honor the lives lived by these people who were captured by primitive cameras in a brief, fleeting moment of time.

Jean was born in Wichita, Kansas and has spent the majority of her life living in the Kansas City area. Extensive travel has broadened her viewpoint and has only increased her curiosity about people and the stories they tell.
