Lexington is a quaint and charming Missouri River town that makes a great day trip and group destination for shopping, history and sightseeing, just an hour east of downtown Kansas City. The city is the home of the famous "cannonball in the courthouse column," a relic of the 1861 Civil War Battle of Lexington. The battlefield is now a state historic site with museum and guided tours of the 1853 restored plantation house used as a field hospital during the battle. Lexington is also rich in the history and lore of the Santa Fe Trail, and was headquarters of the firm that founded the Pony Express. Founded in 1822, Lexington has more than 100 antebellum homes and buildings and was named one of the Midwest’s "Best Old House Neighborhoods" in 2012 by This Old House magazine. Wentworth Military Academy, founded in 1880, is the oldest military academy west of the Mississippi River. Main Street features more than 20 antique shops, specialty stores and restaurants, many in restored buildings. Several wineries are nearby and apple and peach orchards with roadside stands feature their produce in late summer and fall. Annual events include the Lexington Community Fair in August, Old Homes Tour in September and Apples, Arts & Antiques Festival the first weekend in October. The Lexington Tourism Bureau is experienced in planning itineraries, making reservations and assisting in meeting and group tour planning.
