By offering new access to Kansas City’s revitalized riverfront district, the Riverfront Extension will reshape how locals and visitors explore the Heart of America.

On May 18, the Kansas City Streetcar will debut the $60 million extension, completing the 6.5-mile line that connects Kansas City’s distinct neighborhoods and cultural attractions to the Missouri River. The extension will also include a dedicated pathway for pedestrians, bicyclists, and other non-motorized travel along Grand Boulevard Bridge, further enhancing the city’s walkability and connectivity.

New Access, New Opportunities

The route crosses the Grand Boulevard Bridge in the River Market and continues into Berkley Riverfront, ending near the district’s growing Current Landing development.

Anchored by CPKC Stadium, the first stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional sports team, the area has quickly transformed into one of the city’s most exciting new places to stay and play. Since the Kansas City Current’s stadium opened in 2024, the riverfront has welcomed new lodging and entertainment, including the boutique Origin Hotel KC and the outdoor beer garden Two Birds One Stone—just steps from where you can find recreational games at the sand volleyball courts or locals taking a stroll along the riverfront trails.

Current Landing promises to introduce even more experiences to the waterfront, including a lineup of world-class restaurants and bars featuring both local and nationally recognized culinary talent. Centered around a two-acre Town Square directly outside CPKC Stadium, the development is designed to host year-round events, community activations and enhanced match-day activities, bringing new entertainment and nightlife opportunities to Berkley Riverfront for visitors to enjoy before and after games and events. Expanded promenades and green spaces will further connect the district to the surrounding riverfront, continuing the neighborhood’s transformation into one of Kansas City’s premier entertainment districts.

Miles of Amenities

Once open, the extension will directly connect some of Kansas City’s most popular destinations, including:

  • Berkley Riverfront, including CPKC Stadium and Current Landing
  • River Market
  • Downtown Kansas City, including the Kansas City Convention Center and T-Mobile Center
  • Crossroads Arts District, including Union Station and Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts
  • Crown Center, including the National WWI Museum and Memorial
  • Midtown and Westport
  • Country Club Plaza, including The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and Loose Park
  • The University of Missouri-Kansas City

There’s nowhere quite like Kansas City, where you can walk through 15-blocks of Spanish-inspired architecture and then take a quick ride to catch a professional soccer match at the world’s first stadium built specifically for a women’s team. Along the way, it’s just as easy to pause for a great meal from award-winning chefs and local favorites, turning a simple trip across the city into a full day of exploring.

The expansion makes it easier than ever to experience Kansas City without a car. And yes—it’s free to ride. No fares, no passes, just a simple way to move through the city and experience more of what KC has to offer.
