Itinerary – Kansas City Current match weekend

The Kansas City Current are making history after opening the first stadium purpose-built for a professional women’s sports team. But before you join the crowds at CPKC Stadium, make sure you schedule time to explore the sights, sounds and tastes of Teal Town with this itinerary.

Hotel Ideas

Origin Hotel KC

If you’re looking to stay steps away from CPKC Stadium, the new Origin Hotel will put you right by the action. During a stay at the first hotel in Kansas City’s thriving Berkley Riverfront, you’ll find farm-to-table dining, the relaxing Riverfront Heritage Trail and more.

Those wanting to explore more of Kansas City’s Downtown neighborhoods have a wide array of properties to choose from. Many are located on or near the free-to-ride KC Streetcar route for convenient access to Current matches. Here are a few local favorites:

  • Hotel Savoy Kansas City
  • Hotel Indigo Kansas City Downtown
  • Hampton Inn Kansas City Financial District
  • Hotel Kansas City
  • AC Hotel Kansas City Downtown
  • Westin Kansas City at Crown Center

Day 1

AFTERNOON

Made In KC

After arriving in Kansas City, make sure you’re stocked up on local gear for your Current match. Fans can find merch to show their support for Teal Town, plus plenty more KC attire, at local shops like Made Mobb, Charlie Hustle and Made in KC—or grab your gear at the official KC Current team store.

EVENING

For dinner, it just seems fitting to enjoy a Kansas City culinary staple. Feast on hickory-smoked barbecue at popular restaurants near CPKC Stadium like Jack Stack Barbecue, County Road Ice House or Wolfepack BBQ.

Casual Animal Brewery

Afterward, it’s time to hit the town. If it’s bustling nightlife that you seek, make your way to the Power & Light District for options like Mosaic Ultra Lounge or Howl at the Moon.

If creative cocktails and craft beer are more your vibe, explore the Crossroads Arts District for more gems. KC’s booming brewery scene features local favorites like Casual Animal, Double Shiftor Brewery Emperial, and speakeasies like Swordfish Tom’s or the new Le Lounge offer a more sophisticated atmosphere.

Day 2

MORNING

City Market KC

Wake up! It’s match day! Fuel up with breakfast in the River Market at a local coffee shop like Thou Mayest or City Market Coffee.

Then explore the City Market, especially on weekends when the region’s largest farmers market takes place. Even during the week, there are dozens of restaurants and shops to explore. Try a flavorful, locally sourced sandwich at Pigwich or a refreshing salad or wrap at The Hungry Hatch for lunch.

AFTERNOON

Step inside the Arabia Steamboat Museum at the City Market to take a trip back in time. The museum showcases the rich history of an 1800s steamboat that was unearthed and preserved in remarkable condition.

EVENING

KC Current fans

By now, it’s game time! CPKC Stadium opens two hours before the match starts, so make sure you give yourself time to head to the stadium and enjoy the pre-match festivities.

Snag an on-site parking pass, or there are plenty of ways to get to the game via public transit. You can take the free-to-ride KC Streetcar to the River Market and then jump on a free matchday shuttle to the stadium. There’s also a pedestrian-friendly walking route available via the Town of Kansas Bridge and a complimentary bike valet program for cyclists.

Once you’re at the stadium, don’t forget to grab a snack from one of the many local restaurants located inside like Waldo Thai or Yoli Tortilleria.

Win or lose, you’re sure to have enjoyed yourself. At CPKC Stadium, everyone is close to the action and the energy is nonstop.

Day 3

MORNING

Mildred's KC

After the big game, it’s time to keep the good vibes going. Snag a delicious breakfast at a local favorite like Mildred’sor HomeGrown in Downtown KC—or keep an eye out for Pitchside Coffee, a pop-up coffee truck operated by Current players.

Then take the KC Streetcar to Union Station. This historic train station is now also home to some of the city’s top attractions, including Science City, the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium and an annual touring exhibition.

AFTERNOON

Next, head to the historic 18th and Vine District for lunch and more KC history.

Stop for lunch at Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue to enjoy more of KC’s favorite cuisines or check out Smaxx for classic diner dishes.

Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Then as luck would have it, two of the city’s most acclaimed museums are under one roof. At the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum you’ll find even more athletes breaking barriers as the museum chronicles the stars and stories of African-American baseball.

Next door, you’ll find the American Jazz Museum, which The New York Times called “an interactive paradise” with its listening stations, touch-screen adventures and custom soundboards. Delve into the stories of legends like Charlie Parker and Ella Fitzgerald then enjoy live jazz at The Blue Room.
