While they’re not haunted houses, Kansas City is home to many more sites with chilling histories.

Built in 1856, the Alexander Majors House Museum was once the home of Pony Express co-founder Alexander Majors. The home was eventually set to be demolished, but Majors’ great-granddaughter saved the property, living there until she died. People believe her spirit remains in the historic home. 

In the fall, the museum hosts paranormal investigations with a certified medium or self-guided audio tours to search for strange encounters.

Liberty’s Belvoir Winery and Inn — formerly the site of an orphanage, nursing home, hospital and morgue — is now considered one of Kansas City’s most haunted sites. The winery regularly hosts paranormal investigations after dark, especially during the fall.

Not far away in Excelsior Springs, The Elms Hotel & Spa has been known as a relaxing retreat for over a century, welcoming high-profile guests like President Harry Truman and Al Capone.

But with over 130 years of history come some spooky stories of mysterious spirits and shadows. To add a little scare to your stay, The Elms offers paranormal tours each night.
