The story of the early struggle for LGBTQ+ rights has typically been told from the perspective of coastal cities like New York, San Francisco, and Miami. But Lawrence, Kansas, was also a hotspot for activist organizations in the 1960s, and the work that was done there reverberated across the country.
Two of Kansas City’s legendary barbecue restaurants, Gates and Arthur Bryant’s, trace their style to one man: pitmaster and entrepreneur Henry Perry, known as the barbecue king of Kansas City. In the early 1920s, Perry started barbecuing in an outdoor pit, serving up slabs of meat wrapped in newspaper.
