The Library’s annual summer film series returns with a fresh lineup of FREE outdoor movies.

The 2025 Off the Wall rooftop film series repeats our Summer Reading theme, Color Our World, and celebrates the power of joy and creativity in different hues. The series continues with the 1990s science fiction horror film Deep Blue Sea (R, 106 min.)

RogerEbert.com describes this thriller as “a neat package of terror, sharks and special effects.”

Directed by Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2, Cutthroat Island), Deep Blue Sea is set in an isolated deep-sea station. A scientist (Saffron Burrows) and her team research mako sharks to help fight Alzheimer’s disease, but plans go awry when genetically engineered sharks escape on a rampage.

Other notable actors in the ensemble include Samuel L. Jackson, who heads up the corporation paying for the research, and hip-hop rapper LL Cool J as a Bible-quoting cook.

How best to enjoy an evening of downtown KC skyline cinema on the Central Library's Rooftop Terrace:

  • Bring your own blankets or folding chairs for seating. Seating not provided.
  • The Young Friends of the Library will provide free popcorn and beer (while supplies last). Feel free to bring your own food, snacks, and non-alcoholic drinks. No glass containers, please.
  • Doors open at 8 p.m. The Central Library closes at 5 p.m. on Fridays, but the doors reopen at 8 p.m. for Off the Wall audiences.
  • In case of bad weather, the event may be moved indoors or canceled. Watch event pages or the Library’s social media feeds for updates.
