Unknown Dining Venues are Just a Cab Ride Away
“Off the beaten path” doesn’t always mean over the hills and far away. Case in point? These five dining and cocktail hotspots that are a mere walk or cab ride from the convention center yet miles away from “everyday.”
1924 Main St
Distance from Convention Center: .9 milesThis intimate 48-seat speakeasy-esque cocktail bar takes pride in its labor-intensive approach to making drinks. Top-shelf booze. Fresh ingredients. And a super-high regard for hospitality without the snobbery. It’s a reservations-only joint, so make sure you call before trying to pop in. Assuming you could even find it without calling. It’s in the basement of its sister establishment, the Rieger Hotel Grill and Exchange, down a buzzer-accessed, dimly lit flight of stairs.
Must try: If you’re feeling a little spicy (if you’re here, it’s likely you are), try the Beautiful Red Bell. It combines Beefeater gin, a slice of red bell pepper, mint and lime for a cocktail we won’t even try to explain. Just try it!
2000 Grand Blvd
Distance from Convention Center: 1.5 milesLocated in heart of the Crossroads Art District, The Cashew is a hip two-story bar/restaurant that is just as comfortable on game day as it is on date night. Besides its two bars, multiple TVs and good selection of tunes (assuming somebody cool is manning the Jukebox), the Cashew also boasts some spectacular views of downtown Kansas City from its open-air, garage door-style walls.
Must try: If you happen to be in town on the first Friday of a month, the Cashew is known for being a great place to kick-start your First Fridays art walk. This monthly street fest showcases the best of KC’s dynamic arts scene and features all-around good vibes.
4141 Pennsylvania Ave. Ste. 104
Distance from convention center: 3.6 miles This is the place to be if you fancy a little pimento cheese and fried green tomatoes with your drinks. A relatively new guest to Kansas City’s cocktail party, Julep is a Southern-inspired bar specializing in all things whiskey, though they are equally versed in suds, wines and whatever else you need to wet your whistle. Not to mention, its Low Country kitchen cooks up everything from deviled eggs to Gulf shrimp po’ boys.
Must try: Whiskey Tastings are available for larger groups who want to do it up right with a more “educational” approach to their boozing. If you’ve got the time (and a ride), it’s totally worth it.
