Craving something sweet? Get ready to indulge with some of Kansas City’s most indulgent desserts

By Katy Schamberger

It can be hard to save room for dessert, especially when you’ve just finished an unforgettable meal. Yet Kansas City offers no shortage of sweet treats that will easily satisfy even the most discerning dessert palate. Not sure where to start your sweet spree? Grab a spoon (or a straw) and try one of these local favorites:

Baked bliss

Rye KC

Sometimes, the best desserts come from the oven. Don’t leave Tannin Wine Bar + Kitchen without an order of peanut butter cookies stuffed with chocolate (and served warm). It’s hard to choose from the mouthwatering pie selection at Rye, but when in doubt, opt for the lemon meringue (you can order whole pies, too). Nothing’s better than a sweet treat with coffee, and the baked goods selection at The Filling Station is one of the best in the city. Selections change regularly, but if ginger-peach pie is on the menu, get it! If you don’t mind hard-to-find treats, make a beeline for Fervere Bakery for the delightfully complex, not-too-sweet cranberry almond bread, made only from November through February. The best thing about donuts is that they’re an excuse to eat dessert in the morning. Try the peanut butter donut at Donut King (and don’t forget the milk).

I scream, you scream…

Ice cream is a perennial favorite—and Kansas City is no exception. One of the better-kept secrets? The banana split at Paleterias Tropicana, made with your choice of homemade ice creams (warning: it’s big!). Murray’s Homemade Ice Creams & Cookies has seasonal hours, which means opening day is a big deal (this year, it’s March 19). Celebrate with a big bowl of chocolate flake fromage! At sandwich shop The Bite, inventive ice cream sandwiches are part of the menu. Try the Flavor for the Non-Believers, a surprising combination of strawberry balsamic and basil. Satisfy your frozen custard craving at Foo’s Fabulous Frozen Custard, a staple in the Brookside neighborhood. Opt for a concrete—and if you want to treat your four-legged friend, get a puppy sundae!

Sweet sips

Snow & Co. in Crossroads Arts District

Prefer your dessert in liquid form? Grab a straw and sample one of these craveable concoctions. Snow & Company’s cocktail, Elbow’s Sexual Chocolate, is the perfect nightcap: a mix of Christopher Elbow spiced chocolate, Cointreau, St. Germain Elderflower liqueur and milk. Or put some spice in your life with the Mexican hot chocolate at Cocoa Dolce Artisan Chocolates, a delightful combination of dark chocolate, brown sugar, cinnamon and vanilla topped with chocolate shavings, cinnamon sprinkles and marshmallow. Beloved diner Winstead’s serves up some amazing milkshakes and malts. If you feel like sharing, go for the Skyscraper Shake, ideal for 2-4 people. Another classic favorite, the root beer float, gets a tasty upgrade at McCoy’s Public House, courtesy of the restaurant’s homemade root beer.

With all these options, you might just want to skip dinner and go straight to dessert. And we won’t blame you one bit! #TreatYoSelf
