In 1938, the Benny Goodman Sextet was the first big band to perform at Carnegie Hall. That event was later called “jazz’s ‘coming out’ party to the world of ‘respectable’ music.” 

The Kansas City Jazz Orchestra recreates that historic night with a Kansas City twist, featuring Anat Cohen, a New York City-based jazz clarinetist, saxophonist, and bandleader. Before the concert, Cohen leads a one-hour jazz master class for all ages at the Plaza Branch. 

Cohen, a three-time Grammy Award nominee, is known for her stage presence and skill, as well as her ability to attract new jazz fans. 

Fresh Air credited Cohen with “bringing the clarinet to the world.” She’s performed throughout North and South America, Europe, Asia, and India. Cohen has also headlined the Newport and Umbria jazz festivals, Chicago’s Symphony Center, and clubs such as New York’s Village Vanguard. 

Her latest album, Bloom, is the second release from her group, Quartetinho. 

This class is presented in partnership with the Kansas City Jazz Orchestra. Since 2003, the group has celebrated Kansas City’s rich culture through performances and education.
