The restaurant is a penthouse, perched atop Crown Center, offering a spectacular panoramic view of Downtown and the surrounding area. It was designed in 1974 by architect Warren Platner, who also designed Windows on the World in New York and Water Tower Place in Chicago. Though its décor has been updated through the years, the timeless design and elegant surroundings are still breathtaking, and were honored in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects with its Allied Arts and Craftsmanship Award. For the past 17 years The American Restaurant has hosted James Beard Foundation Dinners. A veritable "Who’s Who" of famous chefs have come to Kansas City for these events, giving Kansas City diners a glimpse of the tastes and trends that are shaping American cuisine. The American Restaurant is recognized all over the country as an outstanding icon of fine cuisine. In addition to its Mobil Four-Star rating, The American has received the AAA Four Diamond Award, Wine Spectator Magazine’s Award of Excellence, the Chaine des Rotisseurs Dining and Service Award and Hall of Fame Award, as well as being recognized locally by newspapers and magazines.
