It's our favorite, it's your favorite -- everything just tastes better when enjoyed on a patio. Guest blogger Katy Schamberger (@katywrites) walks you through some of Kansas City's best patios when looking for a refreshing adult beverage or satisfying bite to eat.
Whether you’re headed out for a romantic date, a night out with friends or a weekend brunch, there’s nothing better than enjoying good food and great company on one of Kansas City’s numerous patios. The only problem? Picking a destination!
And that’s where we come in. We’ve scoured the city’s al fresco options (tough job, we know) to bring you some of our favorites, categorized by occasion. All you need to do is sit back, relax and plan your next outing.
There’s nothing better after a long workday than unwinding at happy hour—and Harry’s Country Club offers one of the best in the city. Grab a seat on the sizable patio as you peruse a wide-ranging menu that includes daily drink and food specials from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Need a cocktail recommendation? Try a Moscow Mule, the perfect accompaniment to a hot summer afternoon.
Best Date Night: The Farmhouse
Stroll along the River Market’s tree-lined Delaware Street and you’ll find The Farmhouse. And if you’re in the mood for love, make a date on The Farmhouse patio. A few strategically placed trees offer respite from the summer sun. The patio is especially charming at night, when strands of white lights emit a soft glow that’s a perfect accompaniment to long, leisurely conversation. Oh, and the food and drinks? Well, they’re pretty delicious, too.
Best View: John’s Big Deck
John’s Big Deck’s claim to fame? A big deck, of course. And if you haven’t yet scoped out one of downtown’s favorite watering holes, add it to your summer agenda ASAP. The rooftop deck is located in the heart of downtown, which means you’re surrounded by some of the area’s greatest architecture as you enjoy a frosty beverage and, schedule permitting, live music.
Best Girls’ Lunch: Aixois
Summer in Paris isn’t in the budget? Stow your passport and try the next best thing: a ladies’ lunch on the patio at Aixois. Peruse a menu filled with French fare as you relax at the umbrella-covered tables. The largely residential surroundings make for a picturesque and quiet backdrop so as not to distract from your long-overdue catching up. And when you’re finished with your meal, a stroll through the adjacent Crestwood shops makes for a memorable way to finish your afternoon escape. Bon appetit!
Best People Watching: Harry’s Bar and Tables
Here’s an alfresco equation. Large patio + prime Westport location = some of the best people watching ever. Let’s face it—Westport in the summer can get a lil’ rowdy. And you’ll have a ringside seat at Harry’s Bar and Tables as you sip your way through a refreshing drink menu that blends new favorites with cocktail classics.
Best Sports Viewing: Kelly’s Westport Inn
One of the highlights of Kelly’s Westport Inn’s rooftop deck? Multiple flat-screen TVs that make this a sports aficionado’s haven. And thanks to the covered roof, the deck is open rain or shine and comes complete with fans to help beat the summer heat. While you’re cheering on your team, be sure to soak up the history, too, while you spend time in what’s often said to be the oldest building in Kansas City.
Best Coffee Break: The Filling Station
Lest you think we’re all about the booze (no comment), this one’s for the coffee lovers. Enjoy your favorite brew or freshly squeezed juice on the patio at The Filling Station, which gives you a nearly panoramic view of the city’s Union Hill neighborhood. Oh, and while you’re there, grab a slice of pie. Doesn’t matter what kind—it’s all good. You’ll thank us, we promise!
Best Night Out: The Foundry
No matter the occasion or company, a night out on The Foundry’s patio is bound to be a good one. The sizable patio has plenty of seating (although it gets crowded at night, especially on Friday and Saturday) and is a prime spot to work your way through The Foundry’s extensive food and drinks menu. Bonus? The kitchen stays open until 1:30 a.m., so this is a great choice for a late night pit stop.
Best Ambiance: Gram & Dun
Décor and ambiance can quickly elevate a night out, and you’ll find a heaping helping of both at Gram & Dun. The locally owned gastropub’s carefully decorated interior extends to the large patio that features comfy seating and a prime Plaza view. Whether you opt for brunch, lunch, dinner or drinks, Gram & Dun delivers not just a delicious meal, but a memorable dining experience.
It’s time to get outside, Kansas City. Which patio caught your fancy? And if you didn’t see your favorite on the list, let us know where it is!
