Kansas City Fall Food Festivals
By Mary Bloch
The fall calendar is blanketed with food festivals like an autumn lawn piled with leaves. Here are some golden ones.
Kansas City Renaissance Festival, Aug. 31-Oct. 14
The pomp and pageantry are beguiling, but one can only take so much jousting, candle-making, juggling or fire breathing. Many visitors are just in it for the dinosaur-sized turkey legs, corn on the cob, corn dogs and Italian sausage.
Lenexa Spinach Festival, Sept. 7
Hailed as the “Spinach Capital of the World” in the 1930s, Lenexa pays homage to its heritage during this one-day event. Sample the world’s largest spinach salad, enter your favorite spinach recipe in a contest and let the kids hang out with Popeye and Olive Oyl. Music and games round out the activities, and a food court satisfies the spinach-phobic looking for nourishment during the day.
Greek Festival, Sept. 6-8
Feel yourself transported to Greece as you watch cooking demonstrations, Greek dancing and listen to an oompah or two. Domalthes, souvlaki, spanakopitas, gyros and baklava sweeten the weekend.
Powell Gardens’ Under a Harvest Moon, Sept. 22
Taking a drive to Kingsville to tour the gardens is a treat anytime of year, but participating in the fest is an added incentive to make the trek. Try a delicious variety of farm-fresh foods, as this farm-to-table dinner by The Local Pig's Alex Pope raises funds for Powell's Heartland Harvest Garden.
Plaza Art Fair, Sept. 22-24
Though considered an art fair not a food festival, who has ever strolled the streets of the Plaza during the weekend and not consumed mass quantities of steak sandwiches, burgers, Thai chicken pizza, burnt ends, egg rolls, lettuce wraps, gumbo and oh so much more? While you’re munching, browse the stalls and perhaps buy a piece of art that suits your fancy.
2013 Ciderfest, Sept. 28-29 & Oct. 5-6
Learning how cider is made only skims the surface of these fun-filled weekends at Louisburg Cider Mill. There’s entertainment for the whole family, including hayrides, a pumpkin patch, an honest-to-goodness maze through a cornfield and bluegrass music. Munch on a cider doughnut, caramel apple or kettle corn, enjoy a pancake breakfast, and wash it all down with cider or Louisburg’s own Lost Trail root beer.
American Royal Barbecue, Oct. 3-6
With 500 teams competing, this is the largest barbecue contest in the world. But spectating is more fun and much less pressure. Though you pay for the privilege of watching contestants tend to their smokers, the party scene is worth the price of admission. Buy some ’cue from one of many on-site vendors, or wrangle an invite to one of the VIP tents.
Weston Applefest, Oct. 5-6
A Main Street parade kicks off the festivities, followed by crowd favorite “Mr. Stinky Feet.” Time-honored traditions of soap making and basket weaving complement the more modern activities, such as face and pumpkin painting, and pony rides. Apples turn up in dumplings, pie and cookies, showcasing fall’s favorite fruit.
