Sports 101: Overview
From one of the nation's loudest NFL stadiums to one of NASCAR's newest racing destinations, sports never go out of season in Kansas City. So pick your passion, Kansas City has a sport to match.
The crack of the bat signals springtime has arrived when the Kansas City Royals open the season at Kauffman Stadium. The crowd roars for Cy Young Award-winner Zack Greinke and the "boys in blue" as giant fountains cascade just beyond the outfield wall. On the opposite side of the metro area, the Kansas City T-Bones have built a loyal fan following at their ballpark in Village West.
Arrowhead Stadium belongs to the Kansas City Chiefs August through January. During football season, the stadium parking lot transforms into the world's largest tailgate party--complete with everyone's version of Kansas City barbecue. This season, fans will be treated to the results of a $375 million renovation of Arrowhead, including a new stadium club and expanded memorabilia store.
From April through September, major league soccer's Kansas City Wizards take to the field. The team currently plays at CommunityAmerica Ballpark, while their new soccer stadium is being built in Kansas City, Kansas.
Head Downtown for more action. The city's professional tennis team, the Kansas City Explorers , take over Barney Allis Plaza each July. Craving more sports? Check out the new Independence Events Center and cheer on the Missouri Mavericks minor league hockey team.
The Sprint Center is a state-of-the-art arena that plays host to major sporting events. Attached to the arena is the new College Basketball Experience. The CBE features the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame as well as an interactive fan area. For more sports history, check out the nationally recognized Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, a one-of-a-kind experience.
