Meet Your 2008 Kansas City Royals
Strong arms, a few new faces and powder blue uniforms
Powder blue uniforms and legendary battles against AL rivals the New York Yankees was synonymous with Kansas City Royals baseball in the 1970s and 1980s.
Today, more then 30 years after the “boys in blue” first donned their powder blue uniforms, the once trademark uniforms are back with a recharged championship spirit.
Players to Watch
Greinke, Butler, Gordon, Meche, Bannister and Grudzielanek. These probably aren’t the most recognized names on baseball’s national stage – but for Kansas City fans they are the heart and soul of a 2008 squad dedicated to turning the tide in KC baseball.
The Royals are now a few years into their youth movement with infielders Alex Gordon and Billy Butler and outfielders Mark Teahan and David DeJesus all expected to be big contributors in 2008. The pitching rotation is anchored by last year’s big name free agent signee Gil Meche, as well as Zach Greinke and Brian Bannister.
New in 2008, the team adds a much needed big left-handed bat in free agent outfielder Jose Guillen. Guillen, 31, also adds some veteran leadership to this youthful squad. He spent last season in Seattle where he hit .290 with 28 doubles, 23 home runs and 99 RBI in 153 games.
Meet the Coach
The 2008 Kansas City Royals will be led by new skipper, Trey Hillman. Hillman arrives in KC after spending five years in the land of the rising sun. During his time in Japan, Hillman’s teams reached the post-season three times and won the Japan Series title in 2006. Hillman was named Japan’s “Sportsman of the Year” that same year.
…And the Powder Blues
The new Powder Blue uniforms were designed to both recognize the club's history and winning tradition and also updated the style to represent the "new" Royals. The “new” Royals are an organization committed to building a model franchise in Kansas City. The Powder Blue uniforms will usually be worn on Sunday home games and on special occasions.
