The Kansas City Wizards are now in their 14th season in Major League Soccer, looking to reinforce their dominance at their temporary home, CommunityAmerica Ballpark, while ownership group OnGoal, LLC continues work on a permanent home for the team. Demolition has begun on the old Bannister Mall and nearby buildings, the future site of The Trails, a development including a world-class stadium for the Wizards, soccer fields, retail and office complexes.
The Wizards 2008 season brought not only a change in the team's uniforms, adding navy and yellow accents to a new primary shade of blue (cobalt), but a much bigger change: a new stadium. CommunityAmerica Ballpark proved to be a successful home ground for the Wizards, with the team posting their second-best home record in club history. Claudio Lopez also became the first Wizard signed under the MLS Designated Player rule. The two-time World Cup vet from Argentina went on to lead all MLS newcomers in scoring. Although 2008 again ended with a playoff loss to the eventual champions (Columbus Crew), the team's nucleus is strong going forward.
The Wizards are expecting big things in the 2009 season. Almost all key players return from the 2008 team, and there were several major off-season additions including Midfielder Santiago Hirsig, Forward Adam Cristman and first round draft pick (and former Blue Valley West High School star) Defender Matt Besler.
