Holiday magic comes alive at Kansas City's many theaters. Here's a look at some of the holiday productions planned across the region. Visit our events calendar for a complete list of theater productions planned in KC.
What to Watch this Winter
YULETIDE NOSTALGIA
The sequel to the record breaking hit, Forever Plaid, comes to the American Heartland Theatre at Crown Center this holiday season. Plaid Tidings brings Frankie, Sparky, Jinx and Smudge back with a swingin' holiday spectacular. The show mixes holiday favorites with popular 1950s tunes. (Nov. 5-Dec. 26)
And, a Kansas City holiday tradition returns to the stage for its 30th anniversary production. Charles Dickens' classic, A Christmas Carol is presented by the Kansas City Repertory Theatre. (Nov. 19-Dec. 26)
WINTER DECADENCE
Head to the Music Hall for a production that will leave you grinning. Featuring a cast of more than 200 dancers, the Kansas City Ballet’s enchanting presentation of The Nutcracker is the largest in an eight-state region and one of the hottest tickets in town. (Dec. 11-24)
Another sure-fire hit is the Radio City Rockettes and their Christmas Spectacular show which comes to the Sprint Center in downtown Kansas City for one night only on Friday, Nov. 19.
CHRISTMAS CAROLS
Not even Scrooge could resist these holiday concerts. A local staple for more than 10 years, Quality Hill Playhouse’s Christmas in Song features some of Kansas City’s most talented singers inside one of the area’s most intimate theaters. (Nov. 19-Dec. 26)
For even more holiday songs you know by heart, check out Off Center Theatre for George Harter’s Spectacular Christmas. Back by popular demand, this holiday cabaret is modeled after the primetime television specials of yesteryear (Dec. 2-19).
KIDDING AROUND
One of the most popular children’s book characters will soon take the stage at Union Station. Based on the beloved series by Barbara Park, Junie B. in Jingle Bells, Batman Smells follows the holiday happenings of the first-grader who finds out her Secret Santa is the one girl in her class she doesn't like. Will Junie learn the joy of giving this holiday season? (Nov. 23 to Dec. 30).
The kid-centric fun continues with two family-friendly musical performances from the Kansas City Symphony. Enjoy Christmas with the von Trapp Children on Dec. 3 and 4 as the great grandchildren of the famous Sound of Music family take to the stage. And, on Dec. 18 and 19, the Symphony presents its Christmas Festival, an all new holiday celebration featuring the Symphony and Symphony Chorus, Allegro children's Choir and Rezound Handbell Ensemble, and a special early visit from Santa!
