West of Kearney, off Hwy. 92. Operated for over 100 years and the only school west of the Mississippi River to continuously hold classes during the Civil War. The church offers a picturesque view of 19th-century life through its period-style architecture and furnishings.

Our homeschool group has often attended "prairie school," as the children call it, and couldn't be more pleased. The students are encouraged to dress up like the 1860s (see photo of our group) and even bring a lunch pail to create the full effect of pioneer life. Both on-site teachers have done a great job of re-enacting with a classroom schedule full of history, recitation, music, a spelling bee, and games. Each time we have attended there has been a slightly different variation with Civil War stories, Midwestern artifacts, and a take-home surprise. The cost is quite reasonable and the setting is authentically beautiful. Don't miss the chance to attend a real school day at Mt. Gilead!
