There is something for everyone in Ottawa and Franklin County. Conveniently located just 45 minutes southwest of Kansas City, 30 minutes south of Lawrence and less than an hour from Topeka and Emporia, Ottawa is a growing community that has become a popular destination for day-trippers and for weary travelers looking for a convenient stop outside the metro area.
As Ottawa grows, so do the opportunities for fun and learning. Families take trips to Pome on the Range Orchards and Winery or to one of the four nearby lakes -- Pomona, Clinton, Hillsdale and Melvern. Individuals wander through Downtown learning about the pre-1900 buildings by reading our interactive kiosks, riding the Prairie Spirit Trail -- a 33-mile long rail trail and the first in Kansas -- or shopping our antique malls and other quaint shops.
The first stop is the Franklin County Visitor Information Center. Currently the only visitor center off I-35 near Kansas City, it's open seven days a week and offers a wealth of information on the local area, in addition to brochures and maps for all of Kansas and beyond. The most unique aspect of the center is its neo-Victorian style, built as a tribute to many of the remaining Victorian homes and buildings in Ottawa.
Come for a few hours, an entire day or the weekend. You won’t be disappointed, because you can find a little of everything in Ottawa.
