Now in its 45th season, Kansas City Repertory Theatre is one of the Midwest region's premier professional theatres. The professional theatre-in-residence at UMKC, the Rep has two performance spaces: Spencer Theatre, which is located just four blocks east of the Country Club Plaza, and Copaken Stage, located in the heart of the Power & Light District.

This season, Kansas City Repertory Theatre welcomes back its fourth Artistic Director, Eric Rosen, who founded the nationally recognized About Face Theatre in Chicago.

Rep productions will represent what Rosen values most in theatre vitality, vibrancy, emotion, beauty, and brilliant storytelling. The season begins September 11, 2009, with contemporary composer Stephen Sondheim's brilliant musical "Into the Woods". Also at Spencer Theatre are Jules Verne's beloved classic "Around the World in 80 Days" and Kansas Native William Inge's hilarious "Bus Stop".

Copaken Stage, located in the heart of the new downtown Power and Light District, presents "Palomino", a riveting one man tour-de-force performance written, performed and directed by Obie Award-Winner David Cale. Nathan Jackson's emotionally powerful "Broke-ology" focuses on the struggles of the next generation in our city. The season closes with "Venice", a new musical by Matt Sax and Eric Rosen, which boasts a powerful and highly original score of hip hop music, R&B, art song and opera! Also, the Rep presents the pre-Broadway world premiere of "A Christmas Story, the Musical!", which will surely be a Christmas present for all ages!

If I could give this production more than 5 stars I would. I have never seen such a fine display of acting talent, timing and technical coordination (and I am old enought to have seen a LOT of productions)! Matt Sax is sure to make a name for himself both as a playwright and actor as soon as he hits Broadway! If this is any example I am really excited about our up-coming seasons under the direction of Eric Rosen!

My husband and I love the Rep. We've been season ticket holders for quite a few years now. The sets are always spectacular. We're always anxious to get into the theatre for each show just so we'll have time to look over and marvel at the scene. What I like most about the plays is that they always make you think. They're not just fluff that you'll forget by the next day - they make you think and discuss important topics.

Consistent Quality in Productions

As a season ticket holder for 25 years, I look forward to each new season, and am especially excited about the upcoming one that offers a splendid variety of subject matter and talents. The majority of productions consistently hit the mark as far as getting across the playwrights' messages. Productions at Copaken Stage are attracting new audiences and raising the level of appreciation for KC Rep. Overall, the high quality of acting, directling, lighting, setting, and costuming consistently rival other LORT productions.

This review covers only the period of the 02/03 thru 07/08 seasons.

I've seen most every production in the years stated. I've seen shows that were absolutely spectacular ("Guys and Dolls" comes to mind) and many that weren't worth my time.

Choose your show very carefully and you stand the chance of coming across something quite satisfying and memorable. Buy season tickets and be prepared to leave at intermission with some regularity. Acting? Runs the gamut. Directing? Quite variable. Sets? Consistently marvelous!

I have hope that the new artistic director will breathe some life into this theatre. His direction of "The Trip to Bountiful" last season was very good.

My husband and I have been attending performances at the Rep for about 25 years. The past three years we have purchased season tickets for our anniversary gift to each other. Why? The plays are always excellent and thought provoking. The two stages are wonderful with great acoustics. The musical performances have delighted us, and the serious performances have given us poignant moments and led to deep conversations. We have such superb acting talent in the KC area, and we appreciate how lucky we are to enjoy them six or seven times per year..

Also, we really look forward to our date nights and make them "dinner and a play". We have taken several friends with us to various performances and they have all been very delighted with the Rep in every way.

Also, the variety of subject matter never fails to intrigue us. We are never bored at the Rep.
Thanks for being a special part of this community.

Best Kept Secret in Town

This is the Best Kept Secret in Town! I grew up here, moved away in '74 and back in 94. I heard about the Rep in a Welcome to KC packet of some kind. We'd had an excellent theater experience in Chicago and so signed on & have been fans ever since! I bought as many rows as I could afford for "Christmas Carol" that year & have contintued to do so ever since! I'd give them to strangers rather than have them go to waste. The joy it brings to theater-goers' faces is worth the price. The plays produced by the KCRep are top notch quality and present such a diversity of subject matter and type of production that my husband welcomes the opportunity to take me to dinner and a play!
