For the second year in a row, the James Beard Foundation has nominated Colby Garrelts of Bluestem for its 'Best Chef: Midwest' award. If Garrelts wins at the awards gala in New York on June 8, he joins a growing group of James Beard award-winning chefs from Kansas City. Celina Tio from the American Restaurant won in 2007, and Michael Smith and Debbie Gold won in 1999 while at the American Restaurant. Michael Smith now operates his namesake restaurant in the Crossroads Arts District.
