What memories will you make this season?
During the holidays, Kansas City transforms into a winter wonderland, creating an unforgettable setting for a weekend escape with spectacular holiday entertainment, fun celebrations, exceptional dining and affordable and unique shopping that will warm the spirit of you and yours. Bring your loved ones to Kansas City this winter to experience all of the rich traditions that make the city a magical place to create lasting memories all your own.
Start with the legendary Season of Lights at the Country Club Plaza. The Plaza spends seven weeks each winter dressed in jewel-colored lights — a tradition for 78 years. More than 80 miles of lights outline every shop, dome and tower in this Spanish-inspired entertainment complex. Take it all in during a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Along the street, the season’s crisp air adds to the wintertime ambience as shoppers browse the elaborately decorated windows of the Plaza’s 150 stores. The Season of Lights runs nightly through January 13.
Crown Center brings out the spirit of the holidays with thousands of bright white lights, fun holiday events and one of the largest Christmas trees in the nation. Inside the Hallmark Cards’ owned entertainment complex, children romp on super-sized Crayola products at Crayola Christmas Land. Shoppers browse the ornate specialty shops, each exuding its own character and style. And, families catch Another Night Before Christmas at the American Heartland Theater, a holiday classic with a twist. Outside, visitors can snap a picture next to the Mayor's Christmas Tree, which becomes a centerpiece for the larger than life decorations and the multitude of lights that inhabit the Square. This scene creates a stunning atmosphere for skaters taking a spin around the city’s only public outdoor Ice Terrace.
Before your day is over at Crown Center, take a stroll in an enclosed walkway to Union Station. Restaurants, special exhibits, theaters, a science museum and the KC Rail Experience sit amongst beautiful architecture and holiday decorations at this massive train station. Walk through the forest of more than 100 richly decorated holiday trees and wreathes at Marallic’s Enchanted Forest, one of the Station’s many holiday events.
You may be able to see your breath reflect off the night’s moonlight from the crisp air outdoors, but inside, the city’s stages warm up with timeless holiday classics. The Kansas City Ballet offers a gorgeous presentation of The Nutcracker, a holiday tradition for thousands of families each year. The glorious costumes, enchanting music and entrancing scenery at the Kansas City Repertory Theater’s A Christmas Carol have long been a feature of the Kansas City holiday season. And, the Kansas City Symphony’s The Magic of Christmas delights families with popular Christmas carols, favorite holiday songs and even an appearance by Santa Claus himself.
