Kansas City, Mo. -- First SmarterTravel.com called Kansas City a "Destination to Watch." Then U.S. News & World Report named it one of the country's "Best Places to Retire." Now Kansas City is once again in the national spotlight, this time receiving a slew of positive buzz from the readers of Travel + Leisure.

In the "America's Favorite Cities" survey published by the magazine, Kansas City finished #2 in the Affordable Getaway category and #2 for Affordable Hotels. Kansas City was #4 for Thanksgiving Travel, #6 for Friendly People, #6 for Farmers' Markets, #8 for Peace and Quiet and #10 for Cleanliness. Kansas City International Airport fared well, too-finishing #2 for On-Time Arrivals/Departures, #4 for Staff Efficiency and #9 for Design & Functionality.

Travel + Leisure sponsors the online survey each summer, placing 30 of "America's Favorite Cities" head-to-head in almost 60 categories. This was the first time that Kansas City was included in the annual survey.

"Kansas City's just right if you're looking for an affordable getaway with friendly people and reasonably priced hotels," the magazine's Web site says. "It's popular with visitors around Thanksgiving, when the temperature is brisk and the holiday lights on Country Club Plaza are lit."

In the survey's 56 categories, Kansas City outperformed St. Louis in 48 categories and Dallas/Fort Worth in 45. Furthermore, Kansas City outranked Phoenix in safety, Chicago in intelligence and Washington, D.C., in environmental friendliness. Kansas City also ranked above New York for parks, Seattle for museums and Los Angeles for theater. For a complete list of the rankings, go to TravelandLeisure.com.
