HISTORY: The Chiefs played the inaugural game at Arrowhead Stadium on August 12, 1972, against the St. Louis Cardinals. Since then, the stadium has had numerous improvements. In 1991, a state-of-the-art JumboTron screen was installed, and from 1994 to 1996 other multi-million dollar projects helped to modernize and expand the stadium and its facilities. In 1994, after several investigations into the feasibility of building a rolling roof or dome over the stadium, Arrowhead continued its open-air arrangement and added a natural playing surface.
In April of 2006, Jackson County, Missouri taxpayers approved a 3/8 cent sales tax, which raised approximately $325 million for improvements on Arrowhead. Additionally, the Chiefs contributed $75 million to the project. The renovations began in January of 2007 and are set to be completed by the 2011 season. The improvements will help Arrowhead maintain its longstanding status as one of the top venues for fans to experience the excitement of collegiate or NFL football. The renovation will include the construction of the Horizons Level on top of the upper deck on the south side of the stadium. This level will include a new pressbox, premium seats and luxury suites. The expansion plan for the stadium will add 500,000 square feet to Arrowhead and will include 50% more concession stands and 80% more restrooms. A new stadium club, Chiefs store and Chiefs Hall of Honor will also be constructed.
