Master Class: Debra Taylor, trombone

Debra Taylor has been the Principal Trombonist with the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra since 1989. She teaches trombone and chamber music at the University of New Mexico. She is a member of the Southwest Jazz Orchestra, which is comprised of the region's finest jazz players. Ms. Taylor grew up in rural New York State and began her training while in high school at the Eastman School of Music. She studied at Boston University and received her Bachelor's degree from the renowned Curtis Institute of Music. In 2007 Ms. Taylor received her Master's degree, with an emphasis in Jazz, from the University of New Mexico. Her teachers have been Glenn Dodson, Sam Pilafian, Arnold Jacobs, Michael Mulcahy, Charlie Vernon, Christian Lindberg, and Norman Bolter. Her artistry has taken her from an appearance at Carnegie Hall, with the New York Trumpet Ensemble, to featured solo performances at the International Trombone Festival, International Brassfest, International Women's Brass Conference, and Big Twelve Trombone Conference. She was the soloist for two world premiers at the John Donald Robb Composers' Symposium. Ms. Taylor has held positions with Chicago's Grant Park Symphony, the San Diego Symphony, the Santa Fe Opera Orchestra, and the Florida Symphony. Collaborations have included intensive work with composer Patricia Repar, which resulted in a world premier of breathing bones. mobile mind, and a four-year project with modern dance legend Bill Evans. Ms. Taylor can be heard in recordings with the San Diego Symphony, the Grant Park Symphony, and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. While living in Chicago, Ms. Taylor was the Trombone Instructor at Roosevelt University. She has taught master classes at several international brass festivals and at universities nationwide.
